Background of the study
Digital storytelling has emerged as an innovative pedagogical approach that combines narrative techniques with digital media to enhance the teaching and learning of literature. At Bauchi State University, Gadau, traditional literature instruction often relies on static texts and conventional lecture methods, which may not fully engage students or capture the emotional depth of literary works. Digital storytelling enables educators to present literature in a dynamic and interactive format, incorporating audio, video, images, and text to create immersive narratives (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). This method allows students to explore themes, characters, and plots in a more engaging manner, thereby deepening their understanding and critical analysis of literary texts. Moreover, digital storytelling fosters creativity and collaboration, as students are encouraged to create and share their own multimedia narratives. By integrating digital tools into literature teaching, educators can cater to diverse learning styles and promote a more interactive classroom environment. Despite these benefits, the adoption of digital storytelling in literature instruction faces challenges such as high production costs, limited technical expertise among faculty, and resistance to change from traditional teaching methods. This study aims to analyze the impact of digital storytelling on literature teaching at Bauchi State University, examining its effects on student engagement, comprehension, and creative expression while addressing the barriers to its effective implementation (Chinaza, 2023).
Statement of the problem
The traditional methods of literature instruction at Bauchi State University, Gadau, have been criticized for their inability to fully engage students and stimulate critical thinking. Conventional lectures and textbook analyses often result in passive learning, with students struggling to connect with the narrative elements and emotional undertones of literary works. Although digital storytelling presents a promising alternative that integrates multimedia elements to create interactive and engaging narratives, its application in literature classrooms remains limited. Challenges include the high cost of digital production tools, a lack of training for instructors in digital media, and insufficient institutional support for innovative pedagogical approaches. These obstacles have prevented the widespread adoption of digital storytelling, leaving students with a learning experience that may not fully harness their creative potential. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the impact of digital storytelling on student engagement and learning outcomes in literature courses. It will identify the key challenges impeding its implementation and propose practical strategies to enhance the integration of digital storytelling into the curriculum (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).
